Can we stop with negative stereotypes about developing countries?
I love Saturday Night Live, but recently there have been several sketches with horrifying stereotypes about people in developing countries.
I love Tina Fey, but her portrayal of ‘Blerta’ in a sketch about a new Albanian character in the show Girls was upsetting. Many Albanians agree.
PS I was just in Albania and for the record the women are beautiful and none of them look like that.
This week SNL had a sketch about the Miss World Pageant where the contestants from Moldova, Uganda, and Bolivia continuously interrupt the pageant. It started by poking fun at child labor in Moldova, then Miss Uganda wandered on stage stole the microphone and asked a series of incoherent questions before the host took the mic, informing her that she needs to wait her turn. Miss Bolivia then wandered on stage to reinforce stereotypes that all Bolivia has to offer are jungles and kidnappers.
These stereotypes are offensive. Please stop.
Also can y’all please get it together and add South Sudan and Montenegro to the map behind the weekend update desk? It drives me crazy.
